'Ripping good fun' The Times

-----

At Deapdean School for Girls, Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong have set up their own detective agency。 But they are struggling to find any real crimes to investigate。。。

(Unless you count the case of Lavinia's missing tie。 Which they don't。)

Then Hazel discovers the Science Mistress, Miss Bell, lying dead in the Gym。

To add to the mystery, when she and Daisy return five minutes later, the body has disappeared。

Now Hazel and Daisy not only have a murder to solve: they have to prove one happened in the first place。

Determined to get to the bottom of the crime before the killer strikes again Hazel and Daisy must hunt for evidence, spy on their suspects and use all the cunning and intuition they can muster。

But will they succeed? And can their friendship stand the test?

'A skilful blend of golden era crime novel and boarding school romp 。 。 。 The novel works both as an affectionate satire and an effective murder mystery, and Stevens can go places Enid Blyton never dreamt of 。 。 。 Top class' Financial Times

This book was quite a surprise to me。 I haven't read books in this age category for quite a long time and probably that's why I was so surprised by what I found here。This is a book that is suitable for both children and adult readers。 There are many things that will be appreciated and valued primarily by mature readers, but at the same time there is no fear that this book will be boring for children。 I like how many quite adult themes the author has casually put into this story。 We have here, fo This book was quite a surprise to me。 I haven't read books in this age category for quite a long time and probably that's why I was so surprised by what I found here。This is a book that is suitable for both children and adult readers。 There are many things that will be appreciated and valued primarily by mature readers, but at the same time there is no fear that this book will be boring for children。 I like how many quite adult themes the author has casually put into this story。 We have here, for example, xenophobia, but also a same-sex couple, of which at least one of the partners is bisexual。 All this is presented very subtly, but unmistakably。The whole mystery part is very interesting。 The plot is set in the second half of the 1930s in a boarding school for girls。 The main character, a schoolgirl named Hazel, one evening finds the body of her science teacher in the gymnasium, but when she returns there after a while, the body is gone。 At the urging of her best friend Daisy, the girls decide to solve the mystery。 There are many twists and interesting clues to discover。 The entire book is somewhat reminiscent of Agatha Christie's。I really liked the expressive and complex characters。 Both children and adults。 Daisy and Hazel are very resolute young girls。 I am also happy that the relationship between these best friends was an important aspect of this book。 I especially liked the way Hazel judged her friend's character and the motives behind their friendship。 These are superbly written children's characters。 But I liked the adult characters in this book just as much。 I think that the author has managed to perfectly show that they also have their own problems, which can sometimes affect their attitude towards the students。All in all, this is an excellent book。 I never thought I'd come back to reading children's books again, but I'm beginning to think that I might be missing a lot。 。。。more

This series has been described as one that gets better with each book。 I think that's true but even the first book was brilliant。 At times I was literally on the edge of my seat。 It has cliffhangers at the end of nearly every chapter; it's one of those books that you can't put down。 This series has been described as one that gets better with each book。 I think that's true but even the first book was brilliant。 At times I was literally on the edge of my seat。 It has cliffhangers at the end of nearly every chapter; it's one of those books that you can't put down。 。。。more

Ableism and weird biphobia。 We love to see it in kids' books。 There's a character clearly meant to be Dyslexic but they also call her 'slow' and other synonyms for the same thing。 The whole vibe around her isn't great。 There's also a cheating scandal with the teachers who are clearly meant to be a sapphic relationship but is broken up by a new male teacher。 There's not enough Bi rep to have a Bi person to be cheating in a kid's book。 The mystery was fine and the solution was fine。 I do like the Ableism and weird biphobia。 We love to see it in kids' books。 There's a character clearly meant to be Dyslexic but they also call her 'slow' and other synonyms for the same thing。 The whole vibe around her isn't great。 There's also a cheating scandal with the teachers who are clearly meant to be a sapphic relationship but is broken up by a new male teacher。 There's not enough Bi rep to have a Bi person to be cheating in a kid's book。 The mystery was fine and the solution was fine。 I do like the point of view character and will try the other books。 。。。more

Murder is Bad Manners is the first in the Wells and Wong mystery series for young readers。 Hazel Wong and Daisy Wells are 8th grade students at a boarding school。 Hazel is the daughter of a wealthy businessman from Hong Kong and Daisy is the daughter of a British lord。 Together they start a detective club with only the two of them as members。 They are hoping to find a complex mystery to prove their skills, but poor Hazel was not at all prepared to come across the dead body of one of her teachers Murder is Bad Manners is the first in the Wells and Wong mystery series for young readers。 Hazel Wong and Daisy Wells are 8th grade students at a boarding school。 Hazel is the daughter of a wealthy businessman from Hong Kong and Daisy is the daughter of a British lord。 Together they start a detective club with only the two of them as members。 They are hoping to find a complex mystery to prove their skills, but poor Hazel was not at all prepared to come across the dead body of one of her teachers。 I love the setting in the boarding school and Stevens does a beautiful job explaining the setting for young readers who might not be as familiar with boarding schools。 The characters are interesting and some are perhaps a bit eccentric。 While Hazel is a very likable girl, her friend Daisy, though loved by students and teachers, does not appear to be a particularly nice person。 I admit I may have spent a portion of the book hoping she would be the next victim, but by the end her character had started to soften。 It will be interesting to see where her character goes in future books。The mystery is very well crafted。 There are a good number of suspects with good motives and an adequate number of clues are dropped along the way。 I had a pretty good idea who had done it early on, but to be fair I have years of mystery reading behind me and this was a book directed to young readers。 Also it took me a bit longer to work out the how and why。 I didn't realize when I picked up this book that it was for young people, but I confess enjoyed it and I think it will be very popular for the age groups for which it was written。 A great introduction to the mystery genre。 There's even a dictionary of British and boarding school terms in the back for those not familiar with them。 。。。more

The characters are all very believable。

Hazel

The book was good。 I only gave it three stars because Daisy can be rather annoying much of the time。

Spoko książka, lekka, przyjemna, szybko się ją czyta。 Podobała mi się, chociaż spodziewałam się bardziej spektakularnego zakończenia。

I loved this。 It's very funny and accurately reflects the life and times of girls' boarding schools in the 1930's - as far as I know。 There is a glossary of boarding school terms for the uninitiated。 Daisy and Hazel have their own detective agency at Deepdean School, a girls' boarding school。 After a few minor cases, they get their teeth into their first real case when Hazel happens upon Miss Bell's murdered body in the gym - only to find it had disappeared when she returned with help。The two gi I loved this。 It's very funny and accurately reflects the life and times of girls' boarding schools in the 1930's - as far as I know。 There is a glossary of boarding school terms for the uninitiated。 Daisy and Hazel have their own detective agency at Deepdean School, a girls' boarding school。 After a few minor cases, they get their teeth into their first real case when Hazel happens upon Miss Bell's murdered body in the gym - only to find it had disappeared when she returned with help。The two girls stumble along, finding clues, making false starts but eventually they get their man or rather woman and actually solve multiple murders。 I did get a little confused with all the characters, especially who taught what, but in the end all became clear, the denouement was satisfactory and everyone went off for the Christmas hols。 。。。more

I read this with my daughter who is 11 years old。 We would take turns and read a handful of chapters at a time。 This book was quite easy for her to read- only a few words that I needed to help her with (a few words that she isn't normally allowed to say- but was given leave to in this context)。 After about a third of the way through I don't know who was more excited more! The mystery started out quite quickly when Miss Bell is found dead in the gym, then to top it off her body goes missing! This was a non-stop book that really had us on the edge of our seats。 We thought we had figured it out and then WHAM a plot twist would come out of nowhere。 We really enjoyed this book and all our questions were answered。 The explanation that we got was sound and perfect- we really did feel like we were detectives as well wrapping up a case。 The story really unfolded like a movie as we read it。 I found myself holding my breath and gasping at all the right parts too。 The writing is very smooth and easy to follow。 The author does seem like a natural storyteller with how easy it all came out。 The details were top-notch as well, we could see the school and the characters clearly in our minds。I love the take of the Sherlock and Holmes roles with the schoolgirls。 It's absolutely brilliant set in the '30s, I really felt like we were in the time at a proper boarding school as well。 The characters of Daisy and Hazel were really brilliant in terms of opposites attract situations。 They are much like night and day but they make the best team and I can see a genuine friendship there。 Yes, Daisy is a little bit pushy and slightly cold but I do find that it is a good representation of a girl in her station at the time; This is a great representation of 'stiff upper lip' mentality I would say。 Hazel is a great character to have the POV from。 She is a shy girl and doesn't quite fit in as she is from Hong Kong。 There is a 'separate' way of thought towards her from the other girls and again I think it reflects the times perfectly- well even now, speaking as an Expat myself。 I had read a lot of criticism about the US/UK switch in terms of word usage。 We do live in the UK so we have the English version of the book- so everything was as it should be and wasn't changed in terms of language (though I am American so I can see both versions working in my household)。 I can attest to the realistic feel that this book had in my version and it really did make the book。 I did find myself putting on an accent just to fit in with the characters- and my daughter lol。This was a fantastic book and I was hooked。 More importantly, my daughter was hooked-she would come out of nowhere with the book and start reading with no prompting, which is super impressive! I can not wait to read the rest of the books in this series! 。。。more

Simple statement。 I really enjoyed this book! I liked everything about it, the main characters of Hazel and Daisy were charming, humorous and cheeky。 I loved the fact that the main characters are both female and intelligent! But I had reservations at first that it may be an obvious whodunit but it wasn't, which made it engrossing and I will definitely be reading further into this series。 Great impression so far! Still one of my favourite first instalments of a book series ever, for me。 It loses points for the Hazel/Daisy conflict for me, but other than that it is perfect。

3。5☆This was a great first book in a series。 It was a fun and engaging murder mystery with a host of characters。 There was a lot of inclusion, but certain aspects did feel uncomfortable - especially concerning Hazel's thoughts about herself and heritage as this book is written by a white woman。 I understand that it's normal that Hazel would want to be and idolise the quintessential English girl, but I don't know, it didn't feel good to read。Hazel was great, and Daisy was somewhat annoying。 But I 3。5☆This was a great first book in a series。 It was a fun and engaging murder mystery with a host of characters。 There was a lot of inclusion, but certain aspects did feel uncomfortable - especially concerning Hazel's thoughts about herself and heritage as this book is written by a white woman。 I understand that it's normal that Hazel would want to be and idolise the quintessential English girl, but I don't know, it didn't feel good to read。Hazel was great, and Daisy was somewhat annoying。 But I do think there is a lot of room and foreshadowing of coming growth。 Their relationship wasn't great, but underneath there were some good moments。I'm looking forward to seeing what else the series has to offer。 。。。more
